A two dimensional figure is not possible. So, we should make a 3d figure which has four triangular faces. We can make a pyramid with a triangular base. So, there are only six matchsticks required.

Hello...
According to me I think we can use 6 matches to form a tetrahedron. Tetrahedron has 4 faces In tetrahedron each of face is an equilateral triangle. There are 6 edges in tetrahedron shape.
We can make square by using 4 Matchsticks and then we can put 2 sticks in the form of cross inside the square. Hence we will get 4 equilateral triangle with 6 sticks
