Right to education Act, 2009 (RTE) declares that all children of 6 to 14 years age have the right to free education. And the government has to ensure building of sufficient schools in the neighborhood, appoint properly qualified teachers and make all necessary provisions. In the light of what you have read in this chapter and already know, discuss and delete the importance of this Act for (i) Children, and (ii) Human Development.

The passing of the RTE ,Act, 2009, marks a momentous and historic step towards development of the children of India. It serves as a building block to ensure that every child has his/her right to get quality elementary education and that the State, with the help of families and communities, fulfills this obligation. Few countries in the world have such a national provision to ensure both free and child-friendly education. In India, where the illiteracy level is high, this is a major step towards human development. With a sound educational development, children have a chance at better futures.
