rita present age is twice the age of her coysin sandeep . 5 years ago, the sum of their ages was 14. what are their present ages?

Let the Rita's age be x and hers cousin's age be y.

By the given condition ,

x = 2y

x - 2y = 0 .....................(1)

5 years ago ,
Rita's age = x - 5
Cousins age = y - 5

By the second given condition ,

(x - 5) + (y - 5) = 14

x - 5 + y - 5 = 14

x + y - 10 = 14

x + y = 14 + 10

x + y = 24 .........................(2)

[subtracting equation no. (2) from (1)]

x - 2y = 0
x + y = 24
_________
-3y = -24

3y = 24

y = 24 / 3

y = 8

substitute y = 8 in equation no. (1)

x + y = 24
x + 8 = 24
x = 24 - 8
x = 16

solution \:  \: x = 16 \:  \: . \: y = 8

Thus ...
Rita's present age is 16yrs and cousin's age is 8yrs .

Let the age of her cousin Sandeep 5 years ago be x.

So,

Present age Of Rita = 2 x

Present age of her cousin = x + 5 years.

Now -

The sum of present ages then was 14.

According to the problem ,

2x + x + 5 = 14

=> 3x + 5 = 14

=> 3x = 9

=> x = 3

Present Age Of Rita = 2x = 6 years

Present Age Of Sandeep = x + 5 = 8 Years.
