Rita went for a science fair and saw a project in which three lemons were used to light a bulb. Each of he lemons had zinc and copper strips pierced into it and these strips were connected to eachother through a wire. A bulb fixed to the circuit was glowing. Why was the bulb glowing. Explain.​

In this experiment, lemon juice is acidic and act as an electrolyte. Zinc and copper strips are metals which act as electrodes. Since zinc has more tendency to lose electrons as compared to copper so zinc is the negative electrode (anode) and copper is the positive electrode (cathode). When a battery is connected with a bulb, the circuit becomes closed. Electrons flow from zinc electrode to copper electrode and bulb lights up.
