a) When Vaseline is applied to both surfaces of a living potted plant, then after a few days the plant eventually dies.

b) Vaseline is petroleum jelly that when coated on the leaf surface essentially blocks the stomata. Therefore the plants cannot perform respiration and gaseous exchange. It cannot receive sunlight and stops performing photosynthesis, transpiration and all other functions required for the leaf to survive. Hence it gradually dies.
