Answer:

Cost price = rs 600 or rs 5000

Step-by-step explanation:

Buying price = 60x

Selling price = 500 + 4x

Loss = x% of buying price.

∴Loss = (x) × (60x) / 100

∴ Loss = 0.6x² ..... (1)

We can calculate the loss prom sell and buy, as,

Loss = Buying Price - selling price.  (as buying price is more)

∴ Loss = 60x - (500+4x)  = 56x - 500    ...... (2)

Equating equation 1 and 2, we get

0.6x² = 56x - 500

∴ 0.6x² - 56x + 5000 = 0

Solving the equation for x

multiplying by 10 to the whole equation,

∴ 6x² - 560x + 5000 = 0

∴ 6x² - 60x - 500x + 5000 = 0

∴ 6x(x - 10) - 500(x - 10)  =  0

∴ (x-10) × (6x-500) = 0

Therefor,

x-10 = 0     or      6x-500 = 0

∴x = 10

or

x = (500/6)

Therefore - cost price = 60x = 600 or 5000

Cost price = rs. 600   or rs. 5000
