Explanation:

Given:-

Ritu downstream is 20 km in 2 hours.

Ritu upstream is 4 km in 2 hours.

To find:

Speed of the stream =?

Solution:

The speed of the rowing on still water

denoted by a kmph.

The speed of the stream denoted by

b kmph.

The upstream speed of Ritu’s rowing is

( a – b ) kmph

The downstream speed of

Ritu’s rowing is ( a + b ) kmph

ATQ,

2( a + b ) = 20

a + b =10______________ (1)

and

2( a - b ) = 4

a - b = 2_____________ (2)

adding equations (1) + (2)

a + b + a -b = 10 + 2

2a = 12

a = 6

substitute a value in equation (1)

6 + b = 10

b = 10 - 6

b = 4

therefore speed of stream is b = 4 kmph
