Given data : Ritu walks to her school at a speed of 4 km per hour and takes 45 minutes to reach the school in time. One day she reached 10 minutes late, assuming that she did not start late from school.

To find : At what speed did she walk that day ?

Solution :

  • speed of ritu = 4 km/hr
  • time taken by ritu = 45 minutes = 3/4 hr

Now, a/c given data;

Ritu reached 10 minutes late to the school,

Here, 10 minutes = 1/6 hr

Here;

Time taken by ritu - 1/6 hr

= 3/4 - 1/6 = 18/24 - 4/24

= (18 - 4)/24 = 14/24 = 7/12 hr ----{1}

Now,

⟹ speed = distance/time

⟹ 4 = distance/⅙

⟹ distance = 4 * 1/6

⟹ distance = 2/3 km

Now, from eq. {1}

⟹ speed = distance/time

⟹ speed = 2/3 / 7/12

⟹ speed = (2 * 12)/(7 * 3)

⟹ speed = 24/21

⟹ speed = 8/7 km/hr or 1.1428 km/hr

Answer : Hence, speed of ritu is 8/7 km/hr.
