Let rate upstream be km/h

Then, rate downstream = 2x km/h

∴ Rate of current

12(2x−x)=x2 km/h

∴ x/2 = 2

⇒x = 4

∴ Rate upstream = 4 km/h

Rate downstream = 8 km/h

∴ Rate in still water

= 12(8+4)

= 6 km/h
