River Kaveri originates in Karnataka. In its lower course, it flows through Tamil Nadu. There
has been a dispute between these two states over the sharing of the Kaveri water. The root
of this fight dates back to the agreements signed between the former Mysore state and the
former Madras Presidency in 1892 and 1924. As per the agreement, Karnataka was to seek
permission from Tamil Nadu for any new project in the state. Many efforts were made to
settle this dispute, but all in vain. In 1986, a farmer’s association from Tamil Nadu moved
to the Supreme Court and demanded a tribunal to be formed to settle the water dispute. The
Supreme Court asked the Central Government to form a tribunal and thus, the Cauvery Water
Disputes Tribunal was formed in 1990. The tribunal announced its verdict in February, 2007
by sanctioning water supply to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.
A. Under which jurisdiction does the Kaveri water dispute fall and why? (1.5)
B. In which year, was the tribunal formed and by whom?
