River seems less deeper than they actuall are what is the reasoon

The refraction of light at the surface of watermakes ponds and swimming pools appearshallower than they really are. A 1m deeppond would only appear to be 0.75 m deepwhen viewed from directly above. When light emerges from glass or water into air it speeds up again.
