indeed rivers have played a great role in our life. As water comes in one of the basic needs of an organism. As the topic is related to humans, we have a direct or indirect dependency on water. 

Direct dependency 
We all have to quench our thirst every now and then.

Indirect dependency 
We also need to feed ourselves to keep us going till the next feeding and water is used to irrigate crops for our survival
and for the one who eats meat animal also have water and food the same way we do
