Answer:

A) When Riya took Mineral water in 1st set of experiment she observed that the mineral water is not able to conduct electricity because the water that is in the pure form is not a good conductor of electricity in absence of impurities or ions which help to conduct electricity.

B) When Riya took Saline water in 2nd set of experiment she observed that the saline water is able to conduct electricity because water that is not in pure form is good conductor of electricity in presence of impurities or ions which helps to conduct electricity.

Saline water will act as a conductor of electricity and mineral water as an insulator.

Explanation:

  • We know in electricity, there are conductors and insulators. Conductors allow electricity to flow through them (conductor: conduct of electricity). For example copper wire .
  • Copper wire contains free ions and electrons and when we apply potential difference across the wire, they get the energy and move unhindered on their path.
  • Insulators on the other hand, have immobile ions, that is they do not allow the flow of electricity through them. For example rubber.
  • Similarly here in the question, mineral water (A) will not conduct electricity because we know mineral water is the cleanest and purest form of water and thus it will not have the free ions and impurities for the passage of current.
  • Saline water (B)on the other hand will have some undissolved salt ions that will act as charge carriers and thus, transfer current.
  • Saline water (A) will hence, act as a conductor of electricity and mineral water (B) as an insulator.
