Robert Robert Clive committed suicide in 1774 because he was cross examined.

Major-General Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive KB, FRS (29 September 1725 – 22 November 1774), also known as Clive of India, was the first British Governor of the Bengal Presidency.

Robert Clive was asked to remove corruption in company's administration but he was himself cross examined, 1772 by the British Parliament which was suspicious of his vast wealth.

Although there is no clear justification to why Robert Clive committed suicide, but here are some of the closest attempts to validate his step:

After 1772, his vast wealth and his actions were criticized by most of Britain. The allegations were very extreme and was creating an uproar.

He had a deep and dark history of depression.

He was addicted to opium.

Hence it can be concluded that on 22 November 1774 he committed suicide at his residence in London by stabbing himself with a pen-knife because he was deeply depressed and the immediate reaction was excruciating pain resulting from illness which Clive attempted to alleviate with opium.

Despite a ringing Parliamentary resolution in his favour, a combination of illness and depression probably led him to take his own life on 24 November 1774
