When you are running, your breathing rate increases to compensate for the increased need of oxygen that is required for your body to release energy. When you exhale, you expel carbon dioxide, a waste product of respiration.

Robert decides to go for a run when he gets home from school. As he begins running, his breathing rate starts to increase. The mechanisms that cause his breathing rate to increase as during running our body secretes adrenaline hormone which function is to prepare our body to function at maximum efficiency during emergency situations like danger, anger, excitement, etc and also during running. When we are running then our nervous system stimulates the adrenal gland to secretes more adrenaline hormone into our blood. This hormone increases our heart beats, breathing rate, blood flow into muscles and causes liver to put more stored glucose into our blood. This give us more energy to do work.
