There have only been twelve people who have walked on the surface of the
Moon. The first was in 1969, and the last was in 1972. We have since sent robots
to the Moon but it has been over fifty years since people have walked on the
Moon. When the astronauts went to the Moon fifty years ago they stayed for
just a few hours. Now people in America are planning to go back to the Moon.
This time they want to stay longer, and maybe even try to build bases there. This
is to get ready for an even bigger trip to Mars. If we ever get to Mars it will be
the first time that a human has walked on another planet other than our own!
