We know that rocks break down to form soil which is a prolonged process. This mainly happens due to wind, sunlight, moving water etc. One of the many is temprature. What basically happens is if water occupies in the rock when the tempratures drop they crack because ice expands.

For ex :

if you keep a glass bottle filled with water and put it in the freezer you can see that the bottle has cracked

The same thing happens to the rock. This crack is also known as a fracture. This is why rocks develop cracks due to the change in temprature
