Velocity of Roger = 42 floors/min

Velocity of Edward = 81 floors/min

To find:

The floor number at which their paths cross

Calculation:

Initially Roger is at the 41st floor and Edward is at the 81st floor.Suppose let they meet after ‘t’ minutes.Then

=> 41+42(t) = 81-78(t)

     41+42t = 81-78t

     120t = 40

     t = 1/3 min

Number of floors covered by Roger in 1/3 minutes = 42×(1/3)

                                                                                    =14

After 1/3 min Roger will be at (41+14) th floor i.e., 55 th floor

Final answer:

They will cross their paths at 55th floor
