80/3 km/hr is The average speed for the entire trip from his home to market and then back to home

Explanation:

Let say Distance of market from Home m = D km

Speed from Home to market  = 20 km/hr

Time Taken = D/20  hr

in Return Speed from Market to home = 40 km/hr

Time taken = D/40  hr

Total Distance Covered = D + D = 2D

Total Time taken  = D/20  + D/40  hr

= 3D/40  hrs

Average Speed  = 2D/(3D/40)

= 80/3    km/hr
