Rohan's chemistry teacher performed an experiment. He taught student practically the effect on heat on ferrous sulphate crystals in a boiling tube
The colour of the ferrous sulphate crystals changed
The heating also liberated the gas having the smell of
burning sulphur
1. What changes occur in the colour of ferrous
sulphate
2. Which gas
evolved during heating?
3. What is the colour of the gas evolved?

The answers to the following questions are as follows:

(1) The colour of hydrated Ferrous Sulphate is green but it changes into white by losing water of crystallization and turning into anhydrous ferrous sulphate.

- On further heating, it decomposes and becomes Black due to the formation of Ferric oxide.

(2) During heating two gases are evolved

  • Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

  • Sulphur Trioxide (SO3)

(3) The gases evolved during this process are Colourless.
