Rohan was a fearless boy. He had read stories of ghosts and monsters, but he never believed in their existence.

One day, Rohan and his friends decided to go out camping for the weekend. They prepared, got ready, and set off to a nice forest area close to the town. Walking through the forest was peaceful, and they saw many lush green areas and streams. It was just the monsoon setting in.

The evening approached. They chose a spot and set up the camp, and lit up a fireplace. They had a lot of fun and then they went to their tents. Rohan wasn't really feeling sleepy. His excitement prevented him from relaxing. He came out.

The stars are amazing. Out of the city lights and pollution, the darkness and clean atmosphere provide a stunning view of the starry night. Rohan sat there, admiring the stars, vaguely trying to recall some of the constellations.

Suddenly, he heard a voice. It was a strange voice, Rohan hadn't heard it before. It had a high pitch and was coming continually and in breaks. It had a vague human-like feeling, but quite different enough.

His mind went straight to the stories he had read. His body had started getting into an instinctive fight-or-flight mode. His mind became more susceptive to sounds and their details. He now began to focus on a lot many sounds that just had been noise before. The breeze, the few trees moving along with it, the sound of the leaves, some insects, some strange small noises that Rohan didn't recognize, and of course, this high pitched noise that was coming now and then.

Rohan was now anxious. What could be there? The high-pitched sound reminded him of a few horror movies that he had watched. What was going on? He was now suddenly afraid of every small noise. His eyes were wide open, searching around, looking for clues, trying to find some rational explanation.

Rohan went inside his tent and covered himself with the blanket. He turned on a small lamp inside to try to calm down his now hyperactive mind, focused on every small detail that it could sense. The blanket curlings felt weird, and small fluctuations of lamplight now seemed to worry him.

His eyes still remained wide open. He pulled the blanket down from over the head to breathe better. The high-pitched sound started getting louder. As if something was getting closer to him. And then, Rohan saw it. Something to traumatize him every time he will try to sleep. The silhouette outside the tent in the dim light. He couldn't make out a clear figure. Rohan went totally blank, his eyes fixed on the tent wall. He wanted to scream, yet he couldn't. The silhouette moved on and was now moving closer to the tent entrance. The high-pitched sound eerily continued to make Rohan think of human-like associations in his scared and imaginative mind.

Rohan used to be fearless. He had read and watched so many things, yet came out normally. What suddenly happened? The reality is far stronger, it seems. The mind is no longer in control and in the illusion that the surroundings are fake. It is very much real. The threat is real.

Rohan lied there, paralysed from his fears. Did ghosts really exist? Was he now across one? Would this night be his last night? What would happen? Will a monster-like creature suddenly barge in and do something horrible to him? Endless series of thoughts... Rohan felt his whole existence in danger.

As the silhouette just reached the entrance, his fight response kicked in and he screamed. A loud, painful, fearful voice out rushing towards wherever it could go...

The silhouette suddenly vanished and Rohan heard faint running footsteps. What just happened? Rohan let out a deep breath that he didn't even realize he had been holding. He was now breathing heavily, his mind trying to comprehend the situation around him. His scream sure woke up his friends, who came to him promptly. It took a while as Rohan calmed down enough to speak, and even then he was stuttering, the whole event playing out in his mind again and again.

Rohan couldn't sleep that night. Later on in the morning, they all freshened up and headed back home. Rohan did things subconsciously and out of focus, as his mind remained fixed on the events of the last night.

It took a few days for Rohan's trauma to finally settle down to acceptable levels. One day, Rohan came across a video of different wild animals in the forests. He was watching it and he heard the traumatizing voice again. This time, it was this video, and it belonged to a small wild cat. Rohan never knew they could have such an eery voice... He felt suddenly relieved, and his mystery was resolved.

Forest sounds can be very weird. To someone unknown to the happenings, it would look straight out of a horror movie. Yet, the voices we hear, often they belong to things quite earthly, like you, me or the stray dogs and cats around. The mind is an interesting thing. Rohan learned it that day.
