More than 830 000 Rohingya refugees are sheltering inBangladesh, having escaped violence and persecution inMyanmar. This includes more than 618 000 people, the vast majority women and children, who have fled since violence erupted on 25 August. The momentum and scale of arrivals make this the world’s fastest growing refugee crisis. The incoming refugees are housed or have sought shelter in Cox’s Bazar and its upazilas, where extensive pressure is being placed on resources.
This phase includes immediate and short-term access to cooking fuel for the growing refugee population, and fostering social cohesion with the host community. FAO aims to:
distribute alternative cooking fuel and improved stoves;assess options to address energy needs;provide coordination and technical support to the food security sector;supply refugee households with safe food storage equipment to prevent infestations and food-borne illnesses;distribute inputs and technical assistance to host community farmers and fishers to produce high-demand crops and support markets;establish a nutrition voucher system to increase access to vegetables, fish and dairy products; andundertake cash-for-work activities to address environmental degradation, land stabilization and erosion control in areas where water sources, population security and agricultural lands are threatened.
Phase 2: Self-reliance activities
This phase provides medium- to longer-term support, with a focus on host communities. FAO aims to:
establish small-scale production of alternative fuel and dedicated energy end-use options (e.g. briquettes, biogas, gasification, stoves, pellets, woodlots and nurseries);form agro-forestry and collaborative forest management farming systems, and plant fast-growing wood fuel plants, tree nurseries and seedlings;train women’s groups in energy-saving cooking measures and use of efficient stoves and alternative fuels;support food production and income-generating activities for women and vulnerable groups; andsupport agriculturalist groups to better participate in market activity.
