 5\dfrac{1}{8} - 2 \dfrac{1}{3}

.

Change the denominators to be the same:

 = 5\dfrac{1 \times 3}{8 \times 3} - 2 \dfrac{1 \times 8}{3 \times 8}

 = 5\dfrac{3}{24} - 2 \dfrac{8}{24}

.

Regroup 1 whole into numerator for the the first term:

. = 4\dfrac{27}{24} - 2 \dfrac{8}{24}

.

Minus:

 = 2\dfrac{19}{24}

.

Answer: 2 19/24
