Coke is obtained from the distillation of coal.

Coke is therefore the element Carbon.

Coke is used to extract Zinc from Zinc oxide through a process known as reduction.

The Coke reduces the Zinc Oxide to Zinc metal and the coke is oxidized to Carbon(iv) oxide.

The equation for the reaction is given below as :

2ZnO + C -------> 2Zn   + CO₂

The role of Coke is therefore :

It is a reducing agent
