In a society, people willingly participate because the rewards outweigh the work that is needed to maintain membership. I couldn’t do all of the things necessary for survival on my own, no one can. However, by sharing the workload with others, we all advance. The downside to that is that society values some things more than others. In a traditional hunter gather society, the things most vital to survival yielded the biggest rewards. However, as society changes and evolves, the biggest rewards instead go to those who can accrue the most resources and power.
Traditionally, positions of power are dynastic, with certain families mastering the skills required to maintain that power and then locking them away so that only they may benefit. Education changes that. By allowing knowledge and skills to be developed by anyone who puts in the work, the smartest and most talented, regardless of their family name, may rise to the top. This is why public education was invented in the first place. Education doesn’t maintain social order unless it is hoarded, it changes social order.
Of course, in the real world the rich still get the best tools and send their kids to get the best education, but the invention of the internet is changing even that.
