It forms a boundary between the plant and the external environment. The epidermisserves several functions: it protects against water loss, regulates gas exchange, secretes metabolic compounds, and (especially in roots) absorbs water and mineral nutrients.

epidermis present on the outer surface of the entire body of plant. the cell of epidermal tissue forms a continuous layer without any intracellular space. Epidermis plays a protective role. it protects all the external parts of the plant against loss of water ,machanical injuries etc.
