"The Sermon At Benaras" is an account if the first preaching by Gautama Buddha in Benaras by the side of holy Ganga.

A young lady, Kisa Gotami had lost her only child. She was grief striken. She took her dead son from house to house but with no result. Then she came to Buddha, who advised her to procure a handful of mustard from a house where none has ever died.

Certainly Kisa Gotami could find no such home. In everyone the dead were many where as livings are few.

Buddha then preached her that all mortals must die one day. Like as the ripe fruits are in danger of falling, similarly all the mortals are in danger of death. Rich, poor, wise, fool all must bow before death. Death is ultimate. Nor from sorrowing neither from crying will anyones sorrow will be less but in return his health will decline. Therfore the wise never grief knowing the terms of life.
