On 21st October 1943, Subhash Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji , proclaimed the formation of the Provisional Government of Independent India (Azad Hind) in Singapore. He proceeded to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which had been taken away by the Japanese from the British, and hoisted the flag of India. Aided by Japanese air cover, Subhash Chandra Bose led the INA attack on British Indian territories across the Indo-Burmese border
In May 1944, the army conquered Imphal and Kohima. However, the tides soon turned against Japan and it had to withdraw its aircrafts for the defence of its Pacific territories. The INA retreated to Burma. By May 1945, Burma was re-conquered by the British. Casualties and defeat hit the INA. In spite of its failure, the INA occupies an important place in the history of India's freedom struggle
