Many enzymes in plant cells require magnesium in order to perform properly. However, the most important role of magnesium is as the central atom in the chlorophyll molecule. Chlorophyll is the pigment that gives plants their green color and carries out the process of photosynthesis. It also aids in the activation of many plant enzymes needed for growth and contributes to protein synthesis.

Role of magnesium ion in energy production and chlorophyll:

The magnesium ion is responsible for storing sun energy which is needed for the photosynthesis process. In other words it can be said that the green color of the leaves is due to the magnesium ion present in the plant.

Magnesium is present in the enzyme, in the chlorophyll. Magnesium is also required to activate two enzymes like RuBP carboxlyase. Magnesium is also activates the enzyme which put the sugar into the phloem vessel.
