This is a disc-Shaped structure embedded in the uterine wall.

The foetus part of placenta is formed of villi which lie embedded in Maternal blood spaces.

● Placenta provides nutrition and oxygen to the foetus from mother's blood.

● It removes carbon dioxide and nitrogenous waste from the blood of foetus.

● It produces hormone Progesterone* for maintaining pregnancy

A cord containing blood vessels connects the placenta with foetus.

The perfusion of the intervillous spaces of the placenta with maternal blood allows the transfer of nutrients and oxygen from the mother to the fetus and the transfer of waste products and carbon dioxide back from the fetus to the maternal blood.
