Leguminous plants helps in nitrogen fixing as they contain a special type of bacteria named Rhizobium . The plant provides shelter and food to the bacteria and in return the bacteria fixes nitrogen which is available in free state in atmosphere. These plants transfers the nitrogen to the soil hence there is no need of any extra nitrogenous fertiliser to be sprayed on soil.
