There is a protective layer outside a cell called cell membrane and cell wall in case of plants.
The cell membrane is made up of lipid bilayer with protein molecules embedded in it. The lipid bilayer has a hydrophilic end meets outside the cell whereas the hydrophobic tail is pointing inwards. The embedded molecules of protein perform several functions. They provide channel for other molecules to pass through the membrane and in some cases act as an identification site for to direct other molecules such as nutrients etc.
The cell wall of plant is made up of cellulose. It has a criss cross pattern that protects the cell.
