“Illiteracy hinders the all round progress of a nation”.

Today more than half the population of India is illiterate and no country can make progress if the majority of its people are uneducated. Illiteracy is the real handicap in the progress of our country. It poses a serious threat to democracy in India. Illiterate people are easily be fooled and misguided by politicians. Thus the political life of the country is polluted. Illiteracy is equally harmful to the social life of the country. Many ills which afflict our society today are due to the lack of education. It is high time that we should remove the curse of illiteracy from our country.

The students can do a lot in eradicating illiteracy from the soil of our country. The students should volunteer themselves to take literacy classes. Their motto should be “Each one, Teach one’. By sparing two hours a week, we can make the whole country literate. If all the students determine to reach out to those who are not literate, they can usher an era of national development. Students possess a rich and fresh store of energy. They have a lot of time at their disposal. If they gird up their loins they can educate the illiterate masses. It will root out all the maladies like poverty, health problems and over population.
