The sufis and ulama had played a great role for the promotion of Islam in the subcontinent
Explanation:
Sufi
- Sufism has been a tradition in India for more than a thousand years. The Sufism has been a leading institution in South Asia that expanded Islam's presence. During the Delhi Sultanate, the state patronized the Sufi poets and saints for their role in spreading Islam. The Sufis associated the Muslims with the Hindu with their intense commitment to God's love as their basic concept of spirituality. Through religion, race , and ethnicity, they represented mankind. The Bhakthi teachings of Hinduism are closely related to those of the Sufis.
- On the subcontinent, the Sufis struggled relentlessly, selflessly and constantly to spread Islam. They devoted their lives & gave up their homes in support of the cause of Islam. They didn't use arms or swords to do so. The hearts of the people won over by their fondness, compassion, brotherhood and limitless philanthropic deeds.
- The Muslims of this subcontinent owe a great deal to Sufi saints in history, and in a culture where the Muslims still were minorities they built an atmosphere of coexistence. Most of the classical music of today's Subcontinent has originated out of Sufi meditational practices
Ulemas
- In India, before the rule of the Muslim Emperors, Islam spread when Muslim soldiers were engaged in military campaigns. Most Ulemas carried out the task of spreading Islam.
- The Ulema started an orthodox movement in the subcontinent to teach the real essence of Islam on the basis of Quran & Hadis.
- However unlike the Sufis, the Ulemas did not accept the liberal movement or the practices of the Sufis. The Ulemas had a strong presence in the South inclduing Tamil Nadu & Kerala
- After the 1940s, the Tablighi Jamaat (Society for Outreach) became a group that worked mainly among the ulema (religious leaders), highlighting personal renewal, priesthood, missionaries and orthodoxy. Alternatelt, the legitimacy of the mass religion, as well as exaltation of the pirs and the memories of the Prophet, was upheld by other ulemas. The establishment of Aligarh Muslim University with a wider, more progressive curriculum than other major Muslim universities was a result of the fast secularizing movement led by Syed Ahmad Khan.
