Auxin facilitates plant growth by stimulating the plants cells and causing them to enlongate. Not only does auxin enlongate the cells, it enlongates the cells in response to the environment. In response to light, auxin will lengthen the cells on the shadowed side of the stem so that the plant bends toward the light source (this process is called phototropism).
