contribution of women, the determination shown by women at that time which led to the British being forced to withdraw their rule from India. Yes, not many women were educated or liberated enough to participate in the movement, but even those women helped in some way or the other which finally led to one of the greatest successful freedom struggle in the history of man.
Long before any protests were held nationally, Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi had shown the world what capabilities women hold in themselves. In the Revolt of 1857, Lakshmi Bai led the army of Jhansi against the British from the absolute front, and proved those people wrong who thought that war is not a sector of women intervention. She used to go to the battlefield dressed like a man and used to use swords with both her hands.Along with her was Begum Hazrat Mahal of Oudh, who was one of the few royal ladies who fought alongside Rani Lakshmi Bai.
Sarojini Naidu, also known as the Nightingale of India, was elected president of the Indian National Congress. She served as one of the main leaders during the Rowlett Act protests, the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Satyagrahas. This is one of the reasons why she was chosen by Gandhi to lead the Salt Satyagraha from Sabarmati to Dandi.
Aruna Asaf Ali, a radical nationalist played an outstanding role in the historic Quit India Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 9, 1942, and was a prominent leader of the underground movement. She published bulletins, went from place to place and spread the idea of the importance of education in pre-independent India.
Indira Gandhi, one of the most important and well known leaders of the Indian Freedom Struggle, became a member of the Indian National Congress in 1938. After returning to India in 1941 she became fully associated with the proceedings of the INC and played a leading role in the Quit India Movement. Her leadership skills are proved by the fact that she had stayed in Prime Ministerialposition for 15 years, from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 to 1984.
Hence this has been very clear from our very own history that women have never been short of men in any field in the world. Hence on this Independence Day, we all should pledge to respect women and salute their courage and sacrifices towards the nation.
