Xanthophylls are known as accessory photosynthetic pigments that are different from main photosynthetic pigments such as Chlorophylls. Xanthophylls along with carotenes are included in family of accessory pigments called carotenoids whish are composed of 8 Isoprene units. Their major function is to complement the process of photosynthesis and protection of Chlorophyll and act as quencher and scavangers against reactive oxygen species that can harm chlorophylls.
