She has not allowed to do herself that work because she thinks that everybody will laugh at her. This is commonly known as a stereotype and this is all because of caste system.

Roma refuses to do the work thinking that the world will laugh at her. This shows that she was narrow-minded. She thought about the world. She thought what the people will say. It the duty of people to comment on us but we should be strong enough to bear their comments and do our work.
