The famous conservationist, Romulus Whitaker has been awarded the Whitley Award for his work towards conservation of nature. The American-born, 65-year-old Indian citizen, is a reptile expert and environment film-maker and dedicated his entire life in preserving and conserving environment in Southern India. His ambition is to create a network of rainforests throughout India.
When he started work to conserve environment he only had idea of the rainforest research stations; but he didn't have the wherewithal to do anything about it. He said he would spend the award money to set up a research, conservation and education centre at Agumbe. Apart from doing the conservation of rainforests and the rare species of animals and plants, the mission of this research center is to educate hundreds about school children about the forest.
This great but humble conservationist has many feathers in his cap. He is a writer, documentary film maker for Discovery and National Geographic Channels, founder of Chennai Snake Park, etc. The world needs more dedicated and self-effacing conservationists like him to fight the environmental issues globally.
