given :-

x + y = 10

x - y = 2 …(i)

using substitution method,

x + y = 10

=> x = 10 - y …(ii)

putting value of equation (ii) in (i)

=> 10 - y - y = 2

=> 10 - 2y = 2

=> -2y = 2 - 10

=> -2y = 8

=> y = -8/2

=> y = -4 …(iii)

putting value of (iii) in (i)

=> x - (-4) = 2

=> x + 4 = 2

=> x = 2 - 4

=> x = -2
