rationalising the denominator

 \frac{ \sqrt{2} - 1 }{ \sqrt{2} + 1 } = \frac{( \sqrt{2} - 1)( \sqrt{2} - 1) }{( \sqrt{2} + 1)( \sqrt{2} - 1) }

(√2-1)² /(√2)²-(1)² = 2+1-2√2/2-1

3-2√2/1 = a+b√2

on comparing we get,

a = 3 and b = -2
