Root nodules are swellings in the root of leguminous plants. These swellings contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria called Rhizobium.

The nitrogen-fixing bacteria or Rhizobium are able to convert the nitrogen found in atmosphere, to a form that can easily be used by the plant. Nitrogen is vital to plants as it is a major component of chlorophyll.
