hey mate according to me ....
If a multistranded cable is damaged, usually one or a few strands break, so the overall integrity of the cable is maintained.
If a single wire is damaged, the damage can propagate through the body of the wire, causing a catastrophic failure.
Also, a stranded cable is more flexible that a single wire of the same diameter. If a crane cable was solid, it wouldn't be a wire, it would be a solid bar.
