The term Panchayati Raj in India signifies the system of rural local self government. It is created in all the state in India by the acts of concerned state legislature to establish democracy at the grass roots level. It is entrusted with the duties and responsibilities in the field of rural development.

Salient features of the Constitution ( 73RD) Amendment Act, 1992.
1. To provide three - tier system of Panchayati Raj for all States Having population of over 20 lakh.
2. To hold Panchayat elections regularly every five years.
3. Provision of reservation of seats for scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes & Women.
4. To appoint state Finance Commissions to make reccomdations of Financial Power of the Panchayats .
5. To Constitute District Planning Committee to prepare draft development plan for the district as a whole .
Organisations of Panchayate Institutions:
The Three - tier System Comprises the following:
1. Gram Panchayats at Village level .
2. Panchayat Samithi at Block Level or Middle Level.
3. Zilla Parishad at District Level.
In Addition, a Nyayar Panchayat has been provided for every three to four village panyats.
