Laws of refraction state that:

The incident ray refracted ray, and the normal to the interface of two media at the point of incidence all lie on the same plane.

The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is a constant. This is also known as Snell's law of refraction.

1st rule

A beam of light bends towards the normal when it passes through an optically rarer media and into an optically denser one. The refraction angle will be less than the incidence angle in this scenario. When a beam of light passes through water from air, it bends back to its original shape. When a beam of light passes through glass, it bends towards the normal in the same way it does when it passes through air or water.

2nd rule

A beam of light bends away from the normal as it travels from an optically denser media to an optically rarer medium. The refraction angle will be larger than the incidence angle in this scenario. A beam of light, for example, bends away from the normal when it passes through water and into air. A beam of light bends away from the normal when it passes through glass and enters air or water.
