Subtraction of integers
To subtract an integer (b) from another integer (a) , we simply add the additive inverse of the integer b to the integer a.
For any two integer a and b , a - b = a + additive inverse of b
Examples :
(a) 8 - 12 = 8 + additive inverse of
12 = 8 + (-12) = - (12 - 8) = - 4
(b) - 6 - 7 = - 6 + additive inverse of
7 = - 6 + (- 7) = - (6 + 7) = - 13
(c) 4 - 9 = 4 + additive inverse of
9 = 4 + (- 9) = - 5
(d) - 5 - (- 4) = - 5 + additive inverse of
( - 4) = - 5 + 4 = - 1
