On the island again. Will provide periodic observations while I'm here.
Flew down to SXM. Right before our departure, I got an email from St Barth Commuter. They first advised that my 3:15 departure would now leave at 2:45 so that meant 1/2 shorter layover and 1/2 hour sooner to paradise. Also asked that we attach yellow ribbons to any checked bags.
Our departure from JFK was on time. We deplaned down the stairway onto bus which brought us to the east end of the terminal. Once inside there was a rep from SBC with a sign. He took our luggage receipts and directed us up the stairs for the connection. They would retrieve our checked bags. Up the stairs to the former entryway when the airport was operating normally we got to the SBC checkin. Got boarding passes and then we're directed to security where we cleared through. Then to emigration control and finally to the departure area which is in the west end of the terminal that used to be accessed by going down the stairs from the former departure area. There's a half a dozen or so concessions with food and drink and some stores selling duty free items. Checked the prices of the cigars and saw no bargains.
SBC has a habit of departing whenever all the passengers are there and they did so once again. Flight left just after 2 and we're through immigration by 2:30 which was great. Meant that we arrived before our villa agent so we called and he showed up soon after.
Island is very dry and brown. Was told there hasn't been much rain since January. St Jean is still under construction with Eden Rock. Traffic is very heavy. Our villa is on the east side so we had a fair amount of construction to deal with driving from the airport. The hill down to Lorient has only one lane open so traffic has to alternate. Dropped off the bags, got a villa tour and then headed in to Gustavia to get essential first night supplies.
Beautiful sunny morning today. Will post more when I'm sober enough and have time and inclination to write.
