The pillar was manufactured by the forge welding of pieces of wroughtiron. In a report published in the journal Current Science, R. Balasubramaniam of the IIT Kanpur explains how the pillar's resistance tocorrosion is due to a passive protective film at the iron-rustinterface.

The iron pillar rusts because in the air oxygen and other gases are present and in that oxygen reacts slowly with iron which leads to rusting of iron.
