Explanation:

He scattered alpha particles on the gold foil. He observed that on the fluorescent screen particles are forming a certain pattern and at some place there were certainly no particles. And those particles are observed on the dame side of the incidence. As result he concluded that there is something heavier than the alpha particle and that is nucleus. The surrounding of it can be less filled or empty.
