according yo conservation of momentum, the combined mass momentum is same as momentum of bullet before, which is equal to m*v.

Now velocity of combined mass is mv/(m+M).

Kinetic energy = 1/2 * (m+M) * [mv/(m+M)]^2

= (mv)^2/2(m+M)
